Culver Hole Plate

Culver Hole is a mystical place on Gower, rumoured to be used by smugglers to hide their loot. The structure is imposing yet beautiful - etched into the surrounding rocks. However, it is a perilous place to visit and it can be easy to get caught out by the thundering tides. The wind and waves combine to thrash heavily against the rocks, making it a dangerous place to be. After many walks to Culver Hole, I was inspired to create this plate, capturing the strength and beauty of the waves as they rise against the rocks and frame the structure of Culver Hole. The plate is handmade from earthenware clay, the wave design is then sketched onto the glazed plate by myself, and then I delicately carve into the glaze to create the finished piece - a technique known as ‘sgraffito’.
